Is your authentication based on science or opinion?
Our authentication comes from proven training and a reputation for following set standards and principles of Forensics. There is a standard protocol for authenticating an autograph but it starts with education, training and experience. An optimal authenticator should have forensic training, laboratory experience and served an apprenticeship under a court certified forensic examiner. Many other authenticators offer an opinion only, not based in science. Be careful!
Is it true that other authenticators are passing autographs as authentic that are not real, or items that are real as not authentic?
To put it bluntly, YES! Without having the proper training, experience, education and exemplars a third party authentication is nothing but an opinion, not a scientific determination of fact.
Are autograph forgeries a big problem in the autograph industry?
Unequivocally yes. Forgeries are extremely commonplace in the third party market. Approximately 50% of the items submitted directly to me are determined to be forgeries. Make sure to contact a certified forensic examiner before making any future purchases.
What kind of forgeries exist in the marketplace?
- Simple Forgeries (done by forgers attempting to replicate another individuals signature and/or handwriting)
- Copied/Printed Forgeries (Autographs that are printed as part of an original signed photograph)
- Autopen Machine (An automated signature signing machine, often used by celebrities)
- Stamped Signatures (A stamp that is used to place a signature on an item)
- Secretarial Signatures (A secretary who signs mail on behalf of a celebrity)
Someone sold me a forgery, what can I do?
First, you will need to have a forensic handwriting expert determine that you have a forgery. Once the determination has been made, you may take that conclusion to the person who sold you the forgery. If they’re honest, they may refund you. If not, contact your bank and/or payment provider with your evidence and ask them to intervene. If all else fails, you may contact your local law enforcement agency for help. Always use the services of a certified forensic handwriting expert before making any purchases.
